David (by Michelangelo)
David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created in marble between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo. It became a symbol of national resistance in Florence. It was the first David to depict the Biblical character as a young, muscular youth instead of a (sometimes) effeminate teenage boy. He was also one of the first sculptors of his day to try and depict emotion.
