The experience of a migraine is a pain only a select number of the population has experienced. To describe it, imagine pouring boiling hot water into one side of your brain while letting it seep slowly into the other side, then adding the feeling of your stomach going down the steep part of a fast roller coaster, all while adding in flu-like chills throughout the body, lasting anytime between an hour to a few days. For my attacks, I can see it all coming through visual auras, and once it stops, I am left counting down the days until it happens again. At this very moment, a dull head pain sits in the space above my left eye, my left hand tingles in neurological pain, my neck is stiff from the constant tension, and I am weary of every smell that comes along, hoping to not provoke the nausea that fills my presence. This is a normal day, sadly. Pain from a migraine can ruin any plans for the day. I first experienced a migraine in high school and was told it was just stress. The quiet introverted self in me, who did well in school and had plenty of friends didn’t believe stress was the cause. But who was I to question doctor’s opinion? Moving onto University, the pain stepped in regularly, to where I feared traveling without any sort of medication. I’ve tried dozens of different medications where some did nothing, some made it worse, and few rarely worked short term. The pain I experienced ranged from terrible, to meh, to I’M DYING JUST END IT! However, I eventually got to a point where I got down to about one migraine a week, and although that may still sound bad, for me it’s the difference between barely surviving and having a life. It’s an unfortunate truth that learning to live with pain is the goal.
For migraine sufferers like myself, helplessness and vulnerability fill our being. I build a buffer in my schedule in case migraine may sneak in and alter my plans. So, to hear that there is a prescription to help me get back to my days when migraine attacks hit, I am all ears! The idea of enjoying life with friends, taking last minute trips to the mountains would be ideal if I didn’t have the fear of migraine sitting in my thoughts. Although results vary among individuals and is not a preventative treatment, the idea of a fast-acting dissolving tablet is hope for a normal life. Speak with a medical provider if the idea of relief from such pain is what is something of interest.
